An unusual setting, a mysterious twilight and memories of love that become more important than real life: this is exactly the reminiscence of Hugh Jackman's character with a sentimental flavor.
The unremarkable life of the company's owner, Nick (Hugh Jackman), who makes money from memories, will be disrupted by the appearance of a fatal stranger, May (Rebecca Ferguson): This is exactly the woman he's dreamed of all his life. However, their happiness will be short–lived - the mistress disappears under mysterious circumstances, and in order to find her, the man sets off along the path of memories. Along the way, he will encounter drug cartels, former military personnel, devoted lovers, murderers and innocent victims, who, however, will be nothing more than passing characters against the background of all-consuming references to lost love.
The world in which the action takes place immediately attracts attention and arouses curiosity, a desire to unravel it: what happened to the planet and how does humanity itself survive in such conditions? We can guess that countries are suffering from the effects of global warming, but this fruitful theme runs away from the main plot, leaving only exotic locations in which a love story with a whiff of detective unfolds.
The noir atmosphere, which at first stimulates aesthetic pleasure, very soon becomes nothing more than an external visual solution without internal content. And although the camera solutions can be described as rather remote, the plot and the development of the story raise more questions the further away... The creators offer us a lot of intrigue, introduce new colorful characters, and play with flashbacks, however... When the time comes to reveal these intrigues, it turns out that there was no revelation behind these secrets.
The absence of a broader social and humanitarian aspect and excessive focus on the main character and, consequently, his painful fixation on his beloved weakens the story; love itself is unable to become the force that would hold the philosophical and semantic content of the picture. The inclusions of the action genre are not too organic either: in this lyrical and melancholic story, they seem out of place and sometimes even funny.
A reminiscence is an empty thing in a good wrapper, a melodramatic love story. It is valuable primarily as an attempt to approach the social aspect of a changing world that is under threat, but it deviates from this path to tell a rather banal personal story. As a result, this melancholic world is frankly lacking in masculinity. It would be very interesting to see another Reminiscence – in the same world, but with different characters and, of course, with a different director at the head.
